Billing itself as “a bold new take on the beloved classic”, this is Alice Walker’s novel reinterpreted as a musical. In 1909 Celie (Fantasia Barrino), a young black American girl, is given away in marriage by her abusive father to a local farmer, Albert (Colman Domingo), who treats her cruelly and drives away her beloved sister. Deliverance comes in the unexpected form of Albert’s mistress Shug Avery (Taraji P. Henson), a jazz singer who takes her away from her misery.
